The third Sega Smash Pack was released for the Dreamcast in 2001 in North America only. It was called Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 and featured twelve games, although eight of them had been included in previous Smash Packs. These games were:
* Altered Beast (arcade)
* Columns (arcade)
* Golden Axe (arcade)
* Phantasy Star II
* The Revenge of Shinobi
* Sega Swirl
* Shining Force
* Vectorman
The four games new to the Smash Pack compilations were:
* Sonic the Hedgehog (arcade)
* Streets of Rage 2 (arcade)
* Virtua Cop 2 (arcade)
* Wrestle War
Virtua Cop 2 is based on the Arcade game and supports the light gun. The collection was criticized for its patchy performance and poorly emulated music.
An interesting raw text document is included on the game's GD-ROM, apparently written by a Sega employee (it was signed "Gary"; the lead American coder on the project was listed as Gary Lake in the official credits on the disc) who elaborated on the internal workings of the emulator. The file was named ECHELON.TXT, surprisingly referencing one of the foremost Dreamcast piracy release groups of the day, and whose actions could be said to play a significant role in the downfall of the console (Dreamcast games were easily pirated without the need for a modchip). However, at the end it states "Pay your respects to Uncle Sonic, Sony just doesn't get it", alluding to Sega's dropping out of the hardware business after the debut of the PlayStation 2. The disc was released in the last days of the Dreamcast's official lifetime.
