In Race for the Galaxy, players build galactic civilizations by game cards that represent worlds or technical and social developments. Each round consists of one or more of five possible phases. In each round, each player secretly and simultaneously chooses one of seven different action cards and then reveals it. Only the selected phases occur. For these phases, every player performs the phase´s action, while the selecting player(s) also get a bonus for that phase.

Race for the Galaxy är ett kortspel med science fiction-tema där varje spelare försöker expandera och utveckla sin galaktiska civilisation genom kolonisation samt vetenskaplig och social utveckling. Det förekommer ingen konflikt mellan spelarna i bemärkelsen att man krigar om planeter eller liknande, men däremot är det intensiv interaktion i den fas där spelarna väljer vilka handlingar de vill utföra under respektive drag. De valbara handlingarna är Explore, Develop, Settle, Consume och Produce. I varje tur sker enbart de faser som väljs av någon av spelarna. Därför är det viktigt att läsa varandras strategier och taktiska agerande för att välja klokt.
I början kan det vara aningen krångligt att sätta sig in i spelet eftersom korten har lite text och många symboler, men det följer med "fusklappar" till varje spelare. Och det är väl värt mödan.
