Sports Jam is a collection of 12 mini-games based on specific aspects of football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, golf, tennis and cycling. For instance, one event has the player kicking field goals, and another has them blocking slapshots. Some events require rapid button pressing, while success others depend on precise timing. Tutorials before each mini-game explain their specific controls and game mechanics.

The Original mode is a one-player game specific to the Dreamcast version. In this mode, the player can choose between the DC Original mode, which consists of four stages of a set difficulty, and Your Original, in which the player can create their own tournament of up to 12 events. Meeting specific goals in DC Original earn medals that can be used to unlock secrets.

The Arcade mode follows the structure of the arcade game and can be played by one or two players. This mode consists of three regular stages and one final stage that features an event from the first three stages at a higher difficulty level. Players are given three continues to use if they fail to complete an event. Finally, the Vs mode allows two players to compete in any of the 12 events.
